MHHS Library Student Use Policy

Students may check out up to 4 books at a time.
Books are checked out for 2 weeks with 1 renewal if no reserve has been place.

Magazines are checked for 5 days at a time with no renewals.
Please check with the librarian. Current magazines do not leave the library.

·         STUDENT ID CARDS:

Students must have their ID card with them when checking out books in the library. Student Identification Cards
help librarians to quickly and correctly check out books.

·         FINES:

1.     The library will apply a fine for books not returned on time.  Fines are 20 cents each school day.

(Not to include days out of school)  Reference books and materials 35 cents.

2.     There is a  “grace period” of 5 school days.   If a book is not renewed or returned at the end of the
extended grace period, then the charges will begin at the date the books were due.

3.     Students will be allowed to work off their fines (fines must be under $5.00) in the library at $6.00 per hour or .10 a minute
(must do at least 10 min worth at a time). They can do this at lunchtime or after school—not during school hours.
They will wash tables, straighten shelves, stamp discarded books, cut laminated items, letters etc.

4.     Students cannot check out books if they have fines on their record. They may reserve a book for one week or until
they pay their fine.

5.  Class Set Novels Lost or Damaged:  Replacement cost are a minimum of $15.00.

  • A "Class Set" is a book from a collection of novels of the same title used  when students all read
the same book for a class.  Losing one of the books is costly to replace resulting in the price
of the book plus two dollars for processing.

 6.  Lost or Damaged library books:  Students will pay for the cost to replace the book plus $2 processing.

This library use policy exists because high school students need to be responsible for their library book returns.
The grace days allow time for students to receive the first notice from us that their books are overdue.  Books are stamped with a date due
to help remind them of when the book  needs to be returned.  Students need to watch the due date that it is stamped in their books. They are reminded to put the due date notice in their
agenda at the time of checkout.
Limited resources necessitate this change as we need to:

·        Keep the books in circulation, as the collection is limited.

·        Keep the fines paid up before the end of each semester.

The money collected is used for replacing lost books and old books or adding new books to the collection.
