Safety Tips for Kids
  • Never give out personal information such as your name, home address, school name, or telephone number.  Never send a picture of yourself to someone without your parent's permission.
  • Never write to someone who makes you feel uncomfortable or scared.
  • Do not meet someone or have them visit you without the permission of your parents.
  • Tell you parents immediately if you read anything on the Internet that makes you feel uncomfortable.
  • Remember that people online may not be who they say they are.  Someone who says that "she" is a "12-year-old-girl" could really be an older man.
Safety Tips for Parents
  • Have clear, simple, easy-to-ready house rules posed near the monitor.
  • Keep the computer in the family room or another open area of the home where it can be easily monitored.
  • Talk to your children about not responding to offensive or dangerous email, chat or other communications.  Report any such communications to local law enforcement.
  • Do not delete the offensive or dangerous email; turn off the monitor and contact local law enforcement.
  • Have children show you what they are doing online and visit their favorite sites.
  • Be aware of other computers you children use.
  • Talk to your children about what they should do if they see something that makes them feel uncomfortable.
  • Internet accounts should be in the parent's name with the parent have the primary screen name and control the passwords.
  • Consider installing filtering or monitoring software on your computer.
