Reading
Reading is a complex process

  • Children do not suddenly become readers
  • Literacy development is an emerging process based on life and school experiences including:
    • Reading
      • From pictures
      • To reading Letters
      • To reading words
    • Writing
      • From scribbles on paper
      • To marks that look like letters
      • To real letters
      • To writing with letter sound correspondence
      • To writing real words
    • Speaking
      • From Mama
      • To simple sentences
      • To retelling events or stories of his/her own invention

    Helping Your Child

  • The Reading Readiness link is helpful for preschool aged children.

  • The Alphabet Knowledge link is for preschool and early kindergarten.

  • Phonemic Awareness is a necessary part of reading readiness and is appropriate for all of kindergarten and early elementary grades.
