Comment:  If I only had a little money, I would first buy books.  If I had any left, I would buy food and clothing.  Author Unknown

Reading Readiness

                                      Depends on many factors

  • Age related, but not dependant on age
  • Males may be cognitively behind females 6-18 months
  • Visual and auditory memory (remembering what has been heard as well as seen)
  • Ability to note likenesses and differences
  • Eye hand coordination
  • Fine motor abilities (ability to copy shapes, designs)

Helping Your Child

  • Read to your child daily
  • Point out print as you read or in your child's environment (signs, cereal boxes, labels)
  • Provide "props" for children to act out stories they have heard (puppets, dress up clothing, stuffed animals to go with stories)
  • Extend stories through cooking, drawing favorite parts, building scenery to act out a favorite story
