Helping Your Child
-
Do shared reading with your child. Begin by having
him/her read sight words as they are covered in class. Children also
can use beginning letter sounds and picture clues to guess a word at the
end of a sentence.
-
Books with simple, controlled text are best for beginning
readers. Ask the school or public librarian to help you find some of
these for your child.
-
Beginning readers may have memorized the story.
While this is a stage of reading, pointing to the words while reading will
help develop reading skills.
-
Keep reading times short and fun. Reading is hard
work.
-
Keep a "word bank" of words your child can read.
Begin with kindergarten sight words and words familiar to him/her.
These may include names of family, friends or pets.
