USS Gold Star, designated AG12, became a familiar sight in the far-flung ports of Asia during the 1920's and 1930's. Though assigned "Flagship" at Guam, she made frequent voyages ("health Cruises") to Japan, China, and the Philippines with cargo and passengers. She was completely unarmed and so was allowed to visit pre-WWII Japanese ports as a cargo-passenger ship. She was not attached to Asiatic command, but answered only to Washington. Prior to WWII, much of her crew was made up of Chamorros (Natives of Guam). Richard McKenna served in her from 6 August 1933 at the age of twenty years old, through February 1937 when he was transferred to the tanker U.S.S, Barnes where he spent a month of TDY during his re-enlistment in the Navy. |
