The
coffee pot was adjacent to the main condenser. The two pipes over McKenna's
head are the steam exhausts from the engine. Richard
McKenna was a Machinist Mate 1st Class at the time this was taken and was
petty officer in charge of the watch. Part of McKenna's duties was to
evaporate fresh water in the distilling plant. This was crucial since the Yangtze was very
contaminated; the high temperatures
were needed to ensure safety (Madarieta). |
